Anime Watch List 4: When…..

When Marnie Was There

VERY VERY GOOD MOVIE.

Annie was a young girl who kept to herself and didn’t know her selfe worth. At the beginning of the movie she pointed that out herself, her mother who has taken her in felt because she wasn’t her biological mother was at fault for her not fitting in. After an asthma attack the doctor suggested she should stay with family outside of the city.

At first I thought that was wrong, but for Annie that was the best thing. She not only made a friend who helped her see her self worth, but realized she was totally loved. Even if that friend was a ghost.

She did meet some real live people as well and this story was one of the BEST new stories I have seen in a VERY LONG TIME!!

I  got tired of  looking for something new to watch, so I went back to two of my favorite anime. Whispers of the Heart was the first movie and the next one was called The Cat returns.

Whisper of the Heart

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whisper of the Heart (Japanese: 耳をすませば, Hepburn: Mimi o Sumaseba, literally “If You Listen Closely”) is a 1995 Japanese animated coming-of-age romantic drama film directed by Yoshifumi Kondō and written by Hayao Miyazaki based on the 1989 manga of the same name by Aoi Hiiragi. It was animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Nippon Television Network and Hakuhodo. The film stars Yoko Honna, Issei Takahashi, Takashi Tachibana, Shigeru Muroi, Shigeru Tsuyuguchi and Keiju Kobayashi. It was the first theatrical Studio Ghibli film to be directed by someone other than Miyazaki or Isao Takahata.

Whisper of the Heart was Kondō’s only film as director before his death in 1998. Studio Ghibli had hoped that Kondō would become the successor to Miyazaki and Takahata.[2]

It was the only theatrical Ghibli film not directed by Miyazaki or Takahata for seven years until The Cat Returns was released in 2002, which focused on a minor character of the film, Baron. {}

I LOVE this movie and I LOVE this article I just read about it. If you want to look at an anime that has no fighting in it and a good story I hope you take a chance of this one as well as the second one. I am going to add that review here if anyone else would like to read it as well.

The film’s protagonists, Shizuku and Seiji.

It’s almost sinful how little this movie is known or seen. There is no doubt this is one of the most emotionally intricate, beautiful pieces to come out of Ghibli, and modern cinema in general. As Yoshifumi Kondo’s first and last project after tragically passing away, there’s no doubt we preemptively lost who undoubtedly would’ve been one of modern cinema’s greatest directors. So rare is a first attempt so wonderful.

The Cat Returns

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cat Returns (Japanese: 猫の恩返し, Hepburn: Neko no Ongaeshi, lit. “The Cat’s Repayment”) is a 2002 Japanese animated fantasy[3] film directed by Hiroyuki Morita, produced by Toshio Suzuki and Nozomu Takahashi, written by Reiko Yoshida, based on the manga The Cat Returns by Aoi Hiiragi, with music by Yuji Nomi, animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Nippon Television Network, Hakuhodo, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Mitsubishi and Toho and distributed by the latter company. It stars Chizuru Ikewaki, Yoshihiko Hakamada, Tetsu Watanabe, Yosuke Saito, Aki Maeda and Tetsurō Tamba. This is Hiroyuki Morita’s first and only film so far as director for Studio Ghibli.

A spin-off of Whisper of the Heart, it was theatrically released in Japan on July 20, 2002 through Toho and in 2005 in the United States through Walt Disney Home Entertainment.[4] It received an Excellence Prize at the 2002 Japan Media Arts Festival. GKIDS re-issued the film on Blu-ray and DVD on January 16, 2018 under a new deal with Studio Ghibli.[5]{}

The first one was better than the second, but it was something watching cats..

Well, that’s the end of another anime watched list from me, Lee*
